James Sinclair- 'Gulf Stream Blues'
Sample poem
A new collection of poems by James Sinclair is published this month, called Gulf Stream Blues. The poems are in two voices, English and Shetland dialect, and explore one Shetlander’s relationship with his surroundings, the sea, the sky and the weather.
James Sinclair says of his work “I am trying to explain my feelings for the place I live in, the people who populate these islands, and ask a few questions about the bigger picture of life”.

"Sinclair's understated and thoughtful writing style nimbly avoids the cliché traps that a lesser writer could easily wander into.""[F]eatures a warmth and a humour that contrasts its moments of elementally induced melancholia. Ultimately, what is very successful here is the poet's evocation of the small moments of life, which he imbues with a touching familiarity."
- Steven Cheverton, The Shetland Times
"the precision of Sinclair's writing is a recurrent delight. Sinclair's real but unaffected love for his dialect and heritage is registered in language which, very naturally, makes of such admiration evidence of self-consciousness and self-discovery. There is an occasionally breath-taking responsiveness to simple beauty in Sinclair's work, just as there is the unflinching awareness of the hardships undergone by fishermen and sailors. Sinclair avoids any excesses in either "facts" or his response to them; certainly he refuses to see them as anything but a way of life lived in extreme conditions. In short, this is a fine collection from a poet unafraid to put his experiences, dialect and emotions to good use."
